Vivek F. Farias’ paper, Primal-Dual Algorithms for Order Fulfillment at Urban Outfitters, Inc., was a Finalist for the INFORMS 2018 Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice. Farias’ co-authors were J.M. Andrews, A.I. Khojandi, and C.M. Yan. The Wagner Prize was established in 1998 to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Daniel H. Wagner. 

Fiona Murray's winning paper is titled "Trading in the shadow of the market: An analysis of layman-scientist exchange relationships in genetics."

Fiona Murray has been honored with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award for her contributions to innovation and entrepreneurship as part of the Queen of England’s Diplomatic Service and Overseas “New Year 2015 Honours List,” which recognizes Britons for their exceptional service to Britain overseas.

Andrew W. Lo has been named Risk Manager of the Year for 2017 by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). Lo was cited for his “extensive and distinguished academic work and contributions to the risk management profession.” “Andrew is an inspiration to all of us who believe that risk management is everyone's responsibility and should be solidly embedded in the culture and decision-making processes of every organization,” said Richard Apostolik, GARP president and CEO. Apostolik added that Lo joins a distinguished line of honorees “who have contributed in exceptional ways to risk management and the risk profession.”

Georgia Perakis has been selected to be an INFORMS Fellow, Class of 2016. The INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) award honors “distinguished individuals who have demonstrated outstanding and exceptional accomplishments in operations research and the management sciences.” Perakis was cited for “exceptional research, spanning theory to practice with important contributions to variational inequalities, the price of anarchy, dynamic pricing and data analytics, and for her dedicated mentorship of a future generation of operations research scholars.”

Georgia Perakis won the 2016 Best Paper Award Competition of the INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Service Science Section. Her winning paper, co-authored with Lennart Baardman (MIT Operations Research Center PhD student), Maxime C. Cohen (New York University Stern School of Business assistant professor), Kiran Panchamgam (Oracle Retail Science), and Danny Segev (University of Haifa Dept. of Statistics), is entitled “Scheduling Promotion Vehicles to Boost Profits.”

Glen Urban was named a Fellow of ISMS (the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science) at the 2009 INFORMS Marketing Science Conference, held earlier this month at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. The Fellows Awards are given in recognition of cumulative long-term contributions in research, practice, education, and service to the ISMS's efforts to improve the understanding and practice of marketing. Urban shares this honor with MIT Sloan colleagues and inaugural (2008) Fellows John Hauser and John Little.

Steve Graves has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his “contributions to the modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems and supply chains.” Considered among the highest professional distinctions for an engineer, election to the NAE honors outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including … significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

The newly elected NAE class of 2018 will be formally inducted in Washington, D.C., later this year.

 Stephen Graves has been elected president-elect of INFORMs and will serve as its president in 2021. Graves is the Abraham J. Siegel Professor of Management and a professor of operations management at MIT Sloan, and his research focuses on supply-chain optimization, manufacturing flexibility and tactical issues in online retailing. Graves has been a member of INFORMS since he joined as a student in 1974. According to INFORMS, it is the largest international association of operations research and analytics professionals and students.

Steve Graves has received the INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society’s 2017 Manufacturing & Service Operations Management Best Paper Award. This annual award recognizes a paper, from among those published in the prior three volumes of Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, for its contribution to the theory and practice of operations management.

The winning paper, co-authored with Jason Acimovic (Penn State University Smeal College of Business and past MIT Operations Research Center doctoral student), is entitled “Making Better Fulfillment Decisions on the Fly in an Online Retail Environment” (Manufacturing & Service Operations Management 17(1):34-51).

The award was presented at the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society’s business meeting during the 2017 INFORMS annual meeting in Houston.
