Haihao Lu was awarded the INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Prize while he was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Lu won the award jointly with Santiago Balseiro (Columbia University) and Vahab Mirrokni (Google Research). Their winning paper was entitled, “The Best of Many Worlds: Dual Mirror Descent for Online Allocation Problems.”

The citation of the prize said, “The paper unifies a diverse array of resource allocation problems from both modeling and algorithmic viewpoints. Looking at network revenue management, budgeted repeated auctions, online matching and assortment personalization problems through a single model, the authors use the celebrated bid price machinery to give provably optimal algorithms with matching lower and upper bounds on the performance loss. In doing so, the paper dramatically improves our technical understanding of bid price policies, while giving us tools highly relevant to the practice of revenue management.”

Professor Stephen Graves and Jonathan Owen of General Motors have both been awarded the 2023 George E. Kimball Medal for their distinguished service to the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), as well as to the profession of operations research and management sciences.

According to an INFORMS press release, both recipients have been "standout members of INFORMS" and are INFORMS Fellows.

Graves was the 2021 INFORMS President and served as the editor-in-chief of Manufacturing & Service Operations Management. He was also the functional area editor and editor of the Edelman Special Issues of INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics.

Professor Roberto Rigobon, research scientist Florian Berg, and research affiliate Julian Kölbel, have won the 2023 Pagano and Zechner Prize for the best non-investment paper published in the Review of Finance, the journal of the European Finance Association.

Their winning paper is entitled “Aggregate Confusion: The Divergence of ESG Ratings” (Review of Finance, Vol. 26, Issue 6, November 2022).

Berg and Kölbel  are co-founders of the Aggregate Confusion Project.

Steve Eppinger has been named a 2023 Fellow of the Design Society, “an international interdisciplinary community of academics and industry practitioners who share a common interest in developing and promoting a robust, usable, and scalable means of designing complex solutions that are necessary for a sustainable and globalized society to continue to thrive.”

This honor recognizes outstanding contributions to the Society through service, practice, teaching, and research.

Jackson Lu has received three honors:

First, Lu received the 2023 New Investigator Award from the Behavioral Science & Policy Association (BSPA). This award recognizes “an early career scholar whose body of work has advanced the rigorous application and development of behavioral/social science to policy and practice in public, private and/or non-profit sectors.” The award was presented in May at the 2023 BSPA Online Conference on Behavioral Policy.

Second, Lu received the 2023 Outstanding Publication Award from the International Association for Conflict Management, which honors a publication that “significantly advances the study of conflict management and negotiation.” Lu’s winning paper, entitled “Multicultural Experiences: A Systematic Review and New Theoretical Framework,” is co-authored with William W. Maddux (UNC-Chapel Hill), Salvatore J. Affinito (Harvard Business School), and Adam D. Galinsky (Columbia University). The award was announced in July in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the 2023 International Association for Conflict Management annual conference.  (As announced last year, this paper also had won the 2022 Academy of Management Annals Best Article Award, chosen from those published in 2021.)

Third, Lu was a finalist for the Conference Theme Best Paper Award of the International Association for Chinese Management Research, for his working paper entitled, “Polyculturalism: Developing a Broader Scale and Understanding its Links to Creativity,” co-authored with Michael Morris (Columbia University) and Jaee Cho (HKUST). 

Wanda Orlikowski has received the 2023 Lifetime Service Achievement Award from the Academy of Management Communication, Digital Technology, and Organization (CTO) Division.

This award recognizes individuals who "have made outstanding service contributions to the CTO community over the course of their career,” and Orlikowski’s exemplary and long-standing research and mentoring contributions to the field were particularly cited.

Swati Gupta, incoming assistant professor of Operations Research and Statistics, has received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her project entitled “Advancing Equity in Selection Problems Through Bias-Aware Optimization.”

CAREER Awards are the NSF’s “most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization,” whose activities “should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research.”

Mohammed Fazel-Zarandi (Senior Lecturer in Operations Research/Statistics; Research Scientist) won an MIT Sloan School Outstanding Teacher Award for the 2022-2023 academic year. Kerry Siani (Assistant Professor of Finance) also won an Outstanding Teacher Award.  Each year, students nominate instructors for these teaching awards and the final recipients are chosen based on the quantity and quality of their nominations. Deputy Dean Michael Cusumano thanked the winners of this year’s teaching awards for “exemplifying the dedication to pedagogical excellence that is so central to our mission at MIT Sloan.”

Andrew Sutherland (Ford International Career Development Associate Professor of Accounting) and Alexandre Jacquillat (Class of 1942 Career Development Assistant Professor; Assistant Professor of Operations Research/Statistics) were each awarded the 2023 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the school. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT. The Jamieson faculty prize is selected by a review committee at MIT.
